YT: Planet X3 Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBtas1yBRxw
this guy does a good job of reviewing planet x3, which is a game that 8bit guy made.  the game seems like it would be a challenge to play, you have an army but you have to control each unit yourself.  anyway the reviewer covers the art, the sound, the options, the gameplay, and does a good job.  however, there are some sounds that are really loud and if this guy wasn't so earnest i might call them horrific.  all in all good.

YT: 8 bit guy builds his dream computer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayh0qebfD2g
I am impressed by how much time and thought this guy put into building a commodore 64.  I wish he spoke more about his motivitation.  There is some stuff about not being in a distracted environment.  That sounds kinda nice. Anyway, if he can make this thing for under 50 dollars, I might buy one just to see what happens.

YT: Cowboy Coffee

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UAoT21eqXI

Sounds like a fun way to make some coffee. I think I will give it a try.  This guy does a good job of explaining things and the editing is very helpful.

YT: Is a Udacity nanodegree worth it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5twFuwEh5TY
this random guy says yes, a udacity nanodegree is worth it

YT: Udacity Mentor Audition Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VDZ87K3mWM
This guy kills it.  I watched it without sound on accident.  It was pretty funny.  But yeah, he does a good job editing his video and everything he says is on point.

YT: Future of Javascript

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrzhNcBbCos
This guy talks about how new things get added to java script.  There's a committee, and there are five stages each feature needs to pass to get included in the next release.

Anyway, a lot of the stuff I had never heard of and didn't understand.  Except there was a bit about dates and timestamps that seemed like a simple thing so I was surprised that it wasn't adequate, and also the crowd laughed a lot at this slide.

TV: La Reina del Sur Capitulo 10

There was so much melodrama it took me a long time to finish this episode and I almost gave up on the series.  I guess it was about the same as other episodes, my preferences changed?

YT: react.js explained

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPT3bFIwJYA
well i learned react is for webpages, but this video didnt really clear things up because it explained react.js by comparing it to a different framework/library.  i dont have enough experience with java, so i have never used a single library, well, cest la vie.  i have a lot to learn.

YT: Clash royale update sneak peak

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe6vI5RiqAQ
ladder is changing, there are some new game modes, some new cards, and it looks like the ui is changing.  i hope it works out well.  i'm excited for the huge deck game mode.

YT: bad software engineer advice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo52KfvdUUY
some of the advice he finds by googling is really obviously contradictory.  other stuff, well, i think i know more about software than the average joe even though i don't know much.

YT: Guy downloads his google data

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLjht9uJWgw
looks like google keeps all my photos on the internet and anyone can see them.  dunno if this guy's experience would be like mine.  200 gigs of data for him, wonder how many there'd be for me?

YT: Dwarf Fortress Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXAWyyxaQKc
this game seems to be very unique.  each character has a complete history, including health for each finger and toe.  the graphics are terrible, but that leaves the developers to focus on the story, the simulation, and other things.  i think i might play it some time.

YT: Kinesis Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_AvV1dELTo

this guy explains the kinesis keyboard.  he is a believer.  he also has a vertical mouse.  he doesnt really talk about any drawbacks of either, but also he is a longtime user so he might have forgotten any of the negative things that may have happened

YT: Kinesis Keyboard Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHhr30207JY

this guy looks about all the drawbacks:
some keys are too close, its too easy to push buttons

the good things:
macros are in the keyboard so it will work anywhere you take it, def injury free

YT: Nintendo training video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYjgHLFZMa0
the actors with different problems.  its well done.  the customer service looks amazing.  this video is surprisingly great.

YT: Rashida Jones has a docmumentary

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLYszpvyED4

Well she is alright in the interview.  Seems like there's a bit of one-sidedness from the interviewer.  Why did they need to wear matching clothes?  I guess I just wanted to see some critical questioning about weaknesses in the movie, or maybe just tell us if there are any.  It was fine as far as publicity stuff goes.

YT: Day in the life of an indie game developer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9MLwI70zcE

this is more of a fan service video, most of the content is about what he eats, but still, he shows that he codes three times a day, and is exploring a lot.  he also interacts with his followers quite a bit.

TV: La Reina Del Sur Capitulo 9 (Spoiler Alert)

Wow there's some pretty quick action between two characters in this episode.  I can't help but get distracted by the plastic surgery on display. Looks like the lead is going to be a traicante again

YT: Some indie games

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgkbIvOmRWA
i found out about some cool looking games, including agario

YT: Quantam Computing Expert Describes Quantam Computing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWJCfOvochA
What a fun concept.  Usually during interviews I feel like things are a bit dumbed down.  It was fun to see the complexity progress.  I felt like the most explanation came at the second to last level.  I also never felt lost, so I guess I am a bit more informed than I thought.

He mentions a few games:
Holoknight
blow

YT: My Indie Game Launch Revenue Numbers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0VpEZ5tguo
Guy made a game where love is hell and all the enemies are hearts.  I learned about itch.io, which is a free platform kind of like steam.

Here are his takeaways from his soft launch
1. Try weird stuff: he made a founder's edition
2. Always ask to get featured: he tweeted to itch and they featured him
3. Always enable tips: people can add extra money when buying the game
4. audience is super important: getting featured on itch.io actually drew in a lot more people than his 40k youtube subscriber base
5. don't take 4 years: he was scared, limit the amount of time you put into something

YT: generating/demolishing buildings in unity3d

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi3qBzsddcI

pretty cool to watch the buildings change as the settings get changed

YT: how to get stuff done when you don't feel like it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuYUlIDFDO01)Change the environment
2) Write down the tasks you need to do
3) Start with a small task
4) ask yourself why you wanted to do the task
5) Break down the task to make it simpler
6) Just work on it for a few minutes
7) Reward yourself

YT: things I wish I knew when I started programming

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAgegNHVXxE

* Don't try and learn everything. (get started, and then keep optimizing)
* All code is garbage. (don't be intimidated)
* Ends(Project) >> Means(language) [suggestion: JS]
* DO NOT be afraid to learn.

YT: Top Signs of an inexperienced programmer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W_VsLXmjJU

a nice deadpan ending: here's the bullet points:

1. get the architecture wrong
2. write a design docs
3. don't code for coding's sake, think of apm
4. arrogance
5. know the tech lead (what is a tech lead)

i'm not afraid to watch this at 2x speed

TV: La Reina del Sur (Capitulo 8)

A compelling episode, despite the pasted together scene where one woman accuses the main of murder.  As soon as it began you could tell it was the beginning of a long boring arc that would cover several episodes.  But yeah, it was still compelling.

YT: Making an 8 bit Game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hvx4xXhZMrU
This guy breaks down how to make a game that actually fits on real nintendo cartridge.  It takes a lot of careful planning and some things need to get cut out to save space.  He said it was like a game of tetris.

YT: Why I'm so cheap

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQqVny3MKdg

This video has a really stupid intro where this guy tries to get me to buy a lamp so that he gets a commission.  But he has some interesting ideas about money.  For example, he thinks that if you waste money then the other people in your life are having wasted money, too.   He says these things that hint at having a peculiar idea of community but he never clearly explains what he thinks community is.

I can't tell if this guy is trolling or not.  I was able to watch this at 1.75 speed.  He talks slowly.

TV: La Reina Del Sur Capitulos 6 & 7 (Spoiler Alert)

Well episode 6 was good enough that I forgot to review it and went right into 7.  La Reina kicks some ass and also has to sleep with a scum bag to avoid deportation.  This show uses rape and violence very effectively.  La Reina is beating up the woman that planted drugs at her house and called the police.  Here I am cheering on one woman assaulting another.

YT: 8 Bit Graphics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfh0ytz8S0k
this guy explains how to make some graphics in old systems.  making color cells, widening pixels, and sprites.  i think those are the three things.

YT: Guy Talks About Making His own NES game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXbMCKMJXXQ
I think the most interesting thing he mentions is that he looks at NES emulators, which are open source, to better understand the assembly code that the NES actually uses.  That's a cool tip.

YT: The Open Source Computer Science Degree

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyOvFSP_IpQ
This guy did a lot of work:

https://github.com/ForrestKnight/open-source-cs

He made a free CS degree.  I think it might be interesting to do this but I would need a group of people to take the journey with me.

YT: Dude gets a copyright strike and blocked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCK-jm8Nwyc

I sympathize but I dont know if he really convinced me that music companies are striking anything and everything.

YT: Linus Torvalds Ted Talk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8NPllzkFhE
Linus seems like a very self aware guy.  He shares his perspective on being nice.  People say he isn't nice, but he thinks people need to be more aggressive.  He seems like a fairly humble character considering his influence.  All android phones running on derivations of his work.

You can tell the interviewer is from a totally different work type, probably a journalist.  I guess I have more in common with Linus.  I wanted more questions with open answers.  The journalist loaded questions too heavily, it seemed he already knew what he wanted Linus to say.

But anyway, not a bad watch.
