Film: The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal

I might not have known this was a parody until they described the colors the buffmen use.  Red.

Well, I like the idea of creative expression, and the idea of collecting commodities.  And subconscious art.  And the other guy they showed that wasn't Rothko.

Several people recommended this to me.  They don't know each other.

So watching this felt like a meeting with them.  That was interesant.

Well, the film itself.  I'd like to see the Texas version.  We have bigger and dumber highways.

Was the interview with that public official, was that real?  Seemed like it might have been.

But, what is real?

Film: Drop Dead Fred

The best part is when all the invisible friends meet up in the psychiatrist's office and start pretending to puke.  No one can see what their invisible friend is seeing, they can only see their own ghost.  The sinking of the boat... kinda lame.  The surreal journey into the subconscious.. perfect.  The actress does an amazing job of looking like a ghost is moving her body around.

It was fun.  My only quip is that the mom should have been played by two different actors, rather than re-makeuped.  She could have seemed even worse this way.

What did I just watch? A lot of screen changing and typing, fuzzy audio.  I guess I learned about some things... I've never seen some of that stuff before.  Whet is Sublime? It always seems like there is another tool that I have to read up on before I can actually start to do anything.

But yeah, this was over my head.

TV: The Tick SE1 E5

Well this one was a yawn.  I don't think I laughed at all.

The Civic Minded 5 were funny, especially their sedan and the fact that feral boy drives.  But I don't think I laughed out loud.

If the next episode is this stupid I will stop watching the show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9L9yXswSxI

A lock so bad it becomes difficult to pick.

It looked like magic watching him open this thing, but he did it sure enough.

TV: The Tick SE1 E4

The master bread maker is the villain. He makes bread bombs.  He hates white bread.  I can sympathize.  I'm not going to blow up anything, though.

The tick eats an exploding loaf and uses a rolling pin on his stomach.

The ending is fun, they tie in one of the useless superheroes from the city.  He finally helps save the day.

The Tick himself seems a bit schizo, going between making long noble speeches and being a complete idiot.

But it was fun.

TV: The Tick SE1 E3

The bad guy is a mentalist.  He tricks the tick into stealing a powerful helmet that lets the mentalist shoot lasers.  The helmet runs on a two cycle motor, so the good guys pull the choke and everything stops, the day is saved.

A few laughs here and there, but this episode seemed to rest a bit too hard on the choke.

TV: The Tick SE1 E2

So we are introduced to Chairface Chippendale, the biggest baddest guyest.  He tries to carve his name into the sun.  For his birthday.

American Maid a very capable hero, with shoes made of some superior material.

The guy who shoots lasers out of his nose.  LOL

Don't you blow your nose at me mister.

I'm currently overcome by a wave of nausea, forgive this shit review.

TV: The Tick SE1 E1

Well, here's a show I watched as a kid.  Lots of jokes I would still make are scattered throughout the show.  Parody, contempt made fun.

The punisher crying was great.  Tick destroys buildings as goes on patrol, the name of the city that the tick protects is "The City."

It is difficult to tell what the actual meaning of the show is... he really does save the city but also... he is a fool.

Maybe you don't need to be smart to be a hero? Is that some kind of undergrad thesis?

It is a show for children.

Anyway, the bad guys can't be heard because they wear masks.

YT: Pronouncing French vowels

so, it has been a bit since I watched this. I can't remember too much

there seemed to be a lot of irregular pronunciations.

YT: French pronunciation 101

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VOhQ2V4E14

YT: How to pronounce eu in French

So yeah, this was well produced but I don't remember much of the pronunciations.  I was entertained enough to watch again, which I suppose I will have to do.

YT: French Negations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rymbg3PnyL0

So yeah, only one negation per phrase, never two.

I think that's right.

Negation seems more regular than in English.

I'm not sure if this video really helped... just a list of explanations.  Although, the creator does do a pretty good job of laying it out.  It is obviously well prepared.

YT: Useful French Expressions

As the title says, seems to be a bit of useful phrases.  Some people they interview have funny responses.  But... it has been a few days since I watched this and I can't remember any of the phrases that I heard, only the English translations.

So, just watching this doesn't seem to be that effective.

YT: Balance Changes 11/4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLzu1yLBU5U

So yeah, a big witch nerf.  Looks like the whole meta is going to change again.  There are a lot of big changes, mostly nerfs, but the witch seems to be hit the hardest.

Must be hard to balance things across all the trophy ranges and ladder, but still, this balance change seems to be of poor quality.

Film: Event Horizon

I recall watching this when I was younger, chopped up in several parts, probably on a cable movie service, over a series of days.  Channel flipping through at certain moments, seeing the middle three or four times, but never the first 10 minutes.  There were terrifying moments, the gore, the spaceship story seemed quaint, but the images from it have lasted.  The spinning orb that kills people.  Who is the evil in this story?

I'm not quite sure.

I rewatched this with some friends.  We laughed at a lot of parts together.  We tried to guess who would die, tried to guess some of the lines from the story.  It was a good time, but the movie really showed its age.  The cgi was especially awful, although most of the other special effects were quite good, especially the cut up and bleeding skin.

The next day we met a guy who had also watched Event Horizon.  He said he loved the director and loved the movie.  I was surprised... it was mostly a trash film.  Maybe people like popcorn flicks much more than I do.  Mostly I watch movies by myself, often as I eat, the viewing spread out over several periods, sometimes as short as 10 minutes.  People like different things, that's what I learned from this movie.

What Ebert said:
It's all style, climax and special effects. The rules change with every scene.

Deeply buried in "Event Horizon'' is a suspicion of knowledge. Maybe that's why its characters have so little of it.

Film: Pi

Well I rewatched this.  I remember the scenes where he loses his mental to be quite compelling and disturbing.  On this go around I noticed there was a lot of talk of medication.  The personal notes were stupid, almost irrelevant, and that losing your mind might make sense when you come into contact with a higher power.

Drilling into your head might even be rational at a certain stage.  I don't find myself filled with curiousity about the problems that he tries to deal with.  I don't worry about his friend that dies, or the bad guys that give him computer parts.  Mostly I think his neighbor is awesome and cute.  Who wouldn't want those samosas.  I wish I wrote a review of this when I first saw it.  It would be an interesting comparison, then and now.

Well, let's see if Ebert has anything to say.

When you're looking for something that doesn't exist, it makes you crazier the closer you get to it.

But I am thrilled when a man risks his mind in the pursuit of a dangerous obsession. Max is out on a limb.

Film: The Seventh Seal

I did this one backwards, kind of.  I read Roger Ebert's review after I watched the movie and before writing this.

This film I heard two conflicting accounts of.  One was that it was classic, and another that it was a sleep maker.

Well, the first half does start slowly, and the scenes are bland, the dialog sparse.  The setting isn't quite developed.  It was only after reading a review of the film that I realized the plague was real rather than a metaphor.

I did watch this in several parts, maybe it was just inattention.  I think death is an interesting character.  I don't understand the Christian religion and really don't understand what they are referring to most of the time.  But I can see the humanity in it.  Well, what is the point of life?

Dance and be in love, according to lenny Kravitz.

There's a witch to be burned at the stake, it all seemed a bit disjointed.

What was it Really like to live in a village as the plague swept through.  Were people stealing? Running around screaming while dying? Trying to get god to spare them?

Well, were there really strawberries to pick on the road next to the ocean.

I liked this film a lot but I don't think this is what people had in mind when they told me about it.

But yes, I can see how people could obsess over this film and write a lot of stuff, watch it again and again, break down the script.  It is a film for dissection.  I don't know if watching it is really the aim.

Ebert said it was just like a play, and it shows.  It seems like the scenes cut around and there are a lot of solo speech type dialogs.

Well, I might write more later.

Film: Louder Than Words

This film had a much clearer idea of what a film should be.  A deaf girl wants to play drums but her dad doesn't want her to lose her hearing.  Her music director at school who was apparently born yesterday.  Doesn't want the deaf girl to play drums and ruin the fundraising event for the school.

Well, it was fun to see her playing drums while not listening to anything.  Just imagining it in her head.

But everyone seemed to prim and done up.  School is a bit grimier than that, I think.

Film: Lobster

This movie was all in the dark.  There was closed captioning.

I couldn't tell if the lobster was the narrator, or if the actor was a lobster.  There were UFOs, and lots of vomit.

Well, I haven't seen a film like it.  I felt the narrative shift, I sensed the characters struggle.  There was nothing to see.

What an easy feat to reproduce that I'd never seen before.

Film: Dark Light: The Art of Blind Photographers

So there was an art exhibit in Los Angeles featuring photographs by the best blind photographers from around the world.  This film featured three of them.  They had all become blind in different ways.  One had childhood glaucoma, one developed it in his 20s, and another has had a stable but very limited amount of vision his whole life.

Well their photos are pretty amazing.  I don't know if the dramatized shots of them actually taking photos turned out the best results.  One gets the impression that they perform a bit for the camera, or are perhaps distracted by the attention.  They don't normally shoot with a film crew following them around.  There are also some scenes with famous photographers who are sighted, but who are they? They don't seem to have that much to say, or maybe they should just show us some of their own damn photographs.   That might make a bit more sense.

Anyway, there was a bit of nudity, as one photographer likes to work with the human form.  Well, that means it might be difficult to show this to children or in an educational setting.

But yeah, it was very fun to see artists coming from such similar but different perspectives than my own.  One of them said "Art isn't a hobby, it is an obsession." I like that.  I feel camaraderie with these people.  I like that, too.

Film: Lunch With Yoshi 2012

This is a film about a blind woman that can cook.  She lives in Thailand but also speaks English and Japanese.  I wish they would have showed us the food that she cooked, as almost any cooking show would have.  She seems like a very interesting person.  I'd love to each lunch with her.  I'd love to try her food.

She said she uses her ears when she frys things.  I guess I rely on my eyes an awful lot when cooking.  Maybe I should fry something with my eyes closed.  That will be fun.

Film: No Easy Target

A film set in the Star Wars universe, but with jedi who have down syndrome.

The special effects are quite excellent, and like any action movie there is gratuitous shooting and dying.  The jedi must have rejected people, too?  Well that's an interesting question posed by this film.

The sets were pretty neat.  I guess some parts were film in a brewery, which does actually look quite a bit like what a spaceship might.

Well, many of the actors seemed to actually have down syndrome and seemed to be speaking from the heart when they were talking about how excluded they felt.  They made a pretty bad ass film, though it was a bit ham fisted in some parts.  Overall I enjoyed it as any other Star Wars film.

Film: The Adventures of Salt Man

Well, he uses radioactive salt on his food and becomes a salt man.  He hits his head to release salt.. from his hair?

He fights a snail and wins.  I wonder what else he can do.

The animation is fun.  I don't know about the filter that makes it look like old film, but I have seen much worse actual cartoons, like the 20 minute versions.

But also, I learned a bit about neural networks.  I need to bone up on math if I want to play with these.

But also a lot of pitfalls that I would probably fall into.  If it ain't broke don't fix it pushing less than ideal structures ahead into the final product.

Film: Exit Through the Gift Shop

Well I guess I think I know what I am supposed to have learned and seen after this film is over.  "" This guy is a fakey money piler!!!!!!!!

But what I learned was a lot about street art.  They weren't the focus of the narrative.  The clips of them doing shit.  Building, the process, just at kinkos printing and cutting. nothing too crazy

I guess he played everyone and got paid, but I mean he did it.

His art is hacky.  I think he knows.  But the scene, that giant gallery.  He made it into a shopping mall.

I don't know if he is an artist, but what he did was art.

now I read this, just a few seconds after writing this, and I think it is bullshit.

Film: The Fly

A friend of mine said this was the best love story of our time.

I'd seen it as a young and remembered a lot of sweaty people.  The lens of youth.

Well, there were some really lovely scenes in the first half.

The second half, it turns into a bit of a horror movie.  Can't tell how I'd react if my lover turned into an actual monster.  I imagine it would be even more melodramatic than what they put together for this film.

Some pretty good special effects.

Some pretty good leadups to the end.

Some pretty good lead ups to a potential sequel.

Some pretty good questions about love.

Now, let's read what Ebert wrote.

Well, he said some thought it was about the AIDS epidemic.  And that he doesn't like to watch it for fun.

Film: Secret Life of Bees

Watched this on a plane.  Here's my note version review:

Dunno if the pain and sorrow scattered throughout the film really pushed the plot and characters into showing themselves, there seemed to be a disconnect between the action and reaction. And the race issues brought up seemed to be tangential to the personal narratives that were built. I can't fault a film for not having a happily ever after ending, but what is the point of the honey in the film? Maybe I just don't have the perspective to appreciate the symbols.

YT: Javascript Day 7

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ7hvnS0Bfk&t

Somehow got a bit ahead of myself.  I'm on 7 without doing 6.  Probably watched it but forgot to review.

Anyway, map and filter.

I need to really USE these to get them.

They aren't something I learned in the past.

So this video did a few examples.  But all the data was meaningless.  It needs to be meaningful for me.

So, I'll have to code something.  I have a direction, just need a push.

Yes, this video was helpful for me

Film: Casablanca

Rick's Bar Americana

I don't know if it all plays out like a movie, or if it all plays out like real life.  Put that Vichy water in the trash.  I fell asleep during this movie and then woke up and played it again.

I don't know if the characters really love each other, or if the sets are bad.  They drink all the time.  God they must be so drunk.  I'm glad I'm not drunk like that.  I don't know.

It is a classic film.

Sometimes Bogart looks really old, sometimes he looks handsome.

The leading lady looks good, but the lighting around her face is too staged.  Blurry, sheen, impossible.

The lines have been repeated.  Have they always? Was it original then, when it was made?  What movies were overshadowed by this one?

I can't remember the song that they love.

Film: Free Solo

This guy wants to climb a big mountain without a rope.

He has done a lot of other big mountains without a rope.

But there is drama.

He has a small amygdala.

He has a girlfriend, and he climbs with her and keeps geeting injured.

What is the drama in this film? Well they also feature the filmmakers, who are also climbers, who are also friends.  They know that being filmed adds an extra element of distraction or motivation.

They don't really talk about how they are going to keep that to a minimum except they do show a bit of the remote camera gear.  I guess they didn't want to film the filming too much?  But they do, especially with the guy on the ground with a telescopic lens.  They have a bunch of shots of him.

This movie made me feel physically ill at times.  My hands are sweating right now.  But yeah, it seemed a bit hacked up at times.  Maybe it was the voice overs over the photos, and comparing them to the sound of the voices as they spoke naturally throughout the film.  I can't really blame them for trying to maximize the drama.  I don't doubt he climbed the wall.

But it did seem a bit of a star-making rather than film making.   Maybe that quest for purity.  I dunno, this film did keep me awake.

Film: The Dark Knight

I remember seeing this movie a long time ago, maybe in Korea.  The sound had a problem, I couldn't understand batman's low and gravelly voice.  I remember the joker being actually scary.  Some of the scenes with him upside down, it was just the way a bad guy should be shown.

But yeah, this time, the film put me to sleep.  Why is it so long? Who cares about the motorcycle.  The fight scenes flop hard.  Why don't they just shoot batman with a rocket.  He doesn't seem to move fast enough.  But the sleepy part came from mostly the dialog.  I guess I didn't get that Harvey was the white knight, and that left batman to make the name for the movie.

Well yeah, parts of it are great, but it is all spread out over too much time.  I was on a boring flight, hungry, thirsty and tired, hey it was a budget airline.  But, I don't know if I could really recommend this movie for someone to actually watch.  It just isn't compelling enough to sit through.

YT: Ten Days of Javascript Day 3

Here I am a few days out writing this review and I cannot remember the topic of this video.

I think I learned things, but also I was trying to get the code from the video to work in codepen, and it was not working on my Chromebook.  Anyway, I'll keep going but I do feel a bit discouraged with this process.  When can I start to vandalize things?

Well, I knew most of this already, but it was a really clear delivery so it was a great review.  But yeah, I couldn't seem to get codepen working on my Fedora/Firefox setup.  So I was a little distracted during the middle and the end sort of did not make sense.

But yes!  The beginning contained an illuminating segment.  Java treats everything as an object in an array.  Email is just data in an array, putting an email in the trash is just deleting it from an array.  I think I knew that, but I don't think I had it in such clear words.  I might actually have the words wrong, but I think I get the concept.

YT: Steve Kaufman on flashcards

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyJvQ731D-E

Well, this guy doesn't use flashcards.  He thinks developing good habits is the most important thing.  He reads and immerses himself in his target language using a service, where he says he has looked up 13,000 words in a few months (can't remember the timeline, but not long).  He does some math for a flashcard review, basically he would be spending 14 minutes a day reviewing, that doesn't include the time to make the cards.  He makes a persuasive argument that flashcards are not worth the time for him, but he does say that people should do what works for them.

YT: Google's Guide To Prototyping Part Two: Digital Prototyping

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWGBGTGryFk

This video continued to show us how to prototype.  They show some software, I think it is called principle, and how it can be used to prototype.  It costs money and is mac based, so I won't be using it.  It didn't look too crazy, something like Kidpix, know what I mean.  But yeah, the narrator, a google employee, commented somewhere that he uses it on a mac because he also needs the adobe suite, and something like linux is too unsupported.  Well, I don't have the adobe suite and won't be getting it any time soon, so I probably wouldn't be able to use Principle even if I could, if that makes sense.

Anyway, he did make some neat prototypes, and made it look simple.  Certainly looks like a skill.

YT: Google's Guide to Prototyping Part One: Sketching and Drawing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMjozqJS44M

So this video explained prototyping, something like planning the user experience in an app, and then showed how to do it with paper and pencils, and cut out paper.  They used some templates of devices and also things like different colored sticky notes to make things "animate."

It looked arts and craftsy, and I was trying to learn a bit about UX design, but actually I think I'm inspired to make some art in this mode that bastardizes something or other.  Dunno why I always reach to do that.

Anyway, the people in this video are google employees so it is hard to tell if they are robots, but the content itself seems good.  Check out the comments for a few giggles.

YT: Bootstrap in 5 minutes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yalxT0PEx8c

So I've heard about bootstrap a number of times and I knew it had something to do with CSS.  I found this video, which I kind of picked at random.

Really the only thing that I remember, having watched this one day ago, is that bootstrap has 12 columns, and you can use these to control how a webpage looks on devices with different size screens.  So on a big screen it can look one way, and on a small screen a different way, but there can be something like consistency across those two viewings.  Something like that.

Still keeping up with this series.
This function video was good.
Sometimes it is hard to keep track of what I am learning, since I am also trying to study using an app on my phone called Sololearn.

I do remember that the functions in this video didn't quite work on my chromebook.  I imagine it has a special way of handling javascript.  Or maybe javascript has changed and the video is outdated? Just thought of that.

Either way,

It was still an informative watch.

YT: Why being skinnier used to be easier

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObAWB5VGbBo

Alright so this is one of the pseudo factual stories, articles, that basically comes down to a list.  It isn't a real list, its just what the journalist thinks scientists think, or at least what they were thinking when they wrote the research that has been summarized.

So, we have been eating a lot of plastic.  People are on a lot of anti-depressants.  And a few other things.  This is just a list, there was no narrative, not enough examples, so I can't remember the details, mostly what comes to mind is the contempt for this kind of information sharing.  So orderly, so subjective, so unquestioning of the status quo, very lightly shining on the laws that govern the kinds of things our food can be stored in.

Anyway, I'm just grumpy with this, and I don't think I know why we are 10% heavier than we were 40 years ago.

YT: Ten Days of Javascript Day 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4b7LdWAVyw

Well this guy gives a pretty good introduction to javascript.  He showed me how to use the console to execute javascript code, which is something I have not seen done despite completing two javascript tutorials.

I watched it 1.75x speed because he seemed to be talking slowly.  I don't feel like I missed anything, and I didn't have to stop and rewind at all.

Concise and informative.

Film: When Harry Met Sally

The costumes

Most every scene everyone was very well dressed.  They didn't ham it up too much with the four seasons.  Billy looked great a number of times, particularly while eating hotodgs.  But Really Meg Showed a great number in almost every single scene.  She always had a different hat or bag, or her hair done just slightly differently, and it was just the kind of look that entertains without dialog or music, just long enough to keep you focused without getting you too far away from the story.  I think all of her looks could still work today, and that goes for other characters, too.  I've never been a huge fan of the blazer and blue jeans look, though.  Also, it was 103F here today, something like 39.5C, pretty much all of their clothes look like they inhabit a different planet than this one.

The script

Well god damn if there weren't 30 scenes they just fucking nailed.  Watching TV together on the phone? Nice.  How about Their Friends Packing into a cab after a Double Date? Yes.  I can't remember how many times I chuckled, chortled.  They almost lost control of things with the montages and time jumps near the final third.  But they were just saving time for the dramatic conclusion, which played out perfectly, just enough drama and emotion.  Maybe the climax was a bit anticlimactic, actually, but maybe I've just seen those lines copied too many times. It is hard to tell, but it was good either way.

The acting

There were so many lines followed by cuts or moods.  The only one I can remember falling a bit short was the scene with Meg and her two friends at lunch when she tells them she broke up with long-term boyfriend.  She seemed so composed, and then completely lost.  It did not seem plausible, and furthermore it did not match her character, which is always held together. But that is really the only moment in 100 some minutes.  Occasionally Billy was shaky, but it wasn't at critical junctures.  In the store checking out the karaoke machine, he does this "froze" routine.  Shows up a bit later in a dramatic bedroom moment.  Seems a bit heavy handed to have him go blank like that and then have his best friend have trouble noticing.  Maybe that isn't an acting problem, but it was a small bump in an otherwise solid delivery.

The cinematography

Well shit if things weren't pretty fucking amazing all the time.  A few standouts:  Every scene with Meg, in Billy's apartment rolling out a carpet, the phone time movie watching scene, the part where Meg buys a Christmas Tree By Herself.  Seriously I think the film crew was in love with Meg.  They seemed to take extra care for shots of her.  Was she the only one in the film with Green Eyes?  Seemed like it to me.

The test of time

Well fuck, if this isn't a cis gender heterosexual parade.  Monogamous, too.  Seems pretty compelling, but I dunno, I think things have changed a bit in terms of what poeple expect out of relatonships.  Partnerships?  I mean, I hope people aren't feeling too pressured to get married and have kids, just because? Clearly the people in this film have no money problems at all.  They seem very, very well to do.  I think most people have a lot less time and headspace to contemplate romance.  They don't ever talk about their other family members, for example.  No sick relatives, no need to visit distant places, no need to keep track of random people.  But yeah, these are all pretty minor things compared to Billy repeatedly calling Meg.  I'd just call that harrassment.  If she doesn't answer then he shouldn't keep calling.  It is a bit of a montage so it can be bit hard to tell the timespan.  Like, are all these calls in just a week, or are they spread out over time? It made me uncomfortable, and they treated it as romantic and that made me more uncomfortable.  Despite that, I still feel like they have a really good thing going.  Lots of understanding, history, ups and downs.  It is sugary and artificial, but it is the love version of that.  What a watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua-CiDNNj30

This one was long, and so I had difficulty finishing it.  It took me over a month to get to the end, and I watched the last third of it at 2x speed.

Well what did I learn?

There's too much to recap, and like I said I started so long ago, so I've forgotten plenty.

Maybe the most interesting tidbit was about a conference for telling stories with data.  I just wonder what the stories are.  Maybe I should look them up on youtube?

But hey, there were so many things in here that I had already heard of and some things I already have familiarity with.  I find that encouraging.

Film: Phantom Thread

Lot's of spoilers!

I must say that the premise of this movie is a bit thin, but that the impact of the story is not -- more on that later.  There seem to be really only two or three sets.  They are beautiful, and there is a sense of closeness, yet there is a sense that this story is closed and to be only understood by a few.  I think in that last part in particular the film struggles, the story is approachable by anyone, and is not as posh as it presents itself.  I don't know that I am totally convinced in the vanity of the leading man, the eternal bachelor -- this is what I mean about the premise being a bit thin.  He seems like any pompous character ever, successful and cocky, but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of love.  The female lead captivated me much more, or was I just a sucker like him?

But yes, the spoilers, the woman poisons the man so that she can take care of him.  The man seems to be aware! At least the second time she poisons him, he seems to know.  This part seems a bit fantastic to me.  Why would he allow himself to be poisoned?  Is it all a game, and one that he enjoys?  I can't quite decide if this is hacky film making, or actually thought provoking.  Certainly I'm not considering poisoning anyone, or gas lighting anyone.  That's what makes the poison so ridiculous... is that really what love needs?  I might accidentally gas-light someone in haste or in a state of mania, but, to do it because I think it will work... I find that a deeply uncomfortable proposition.

Film: Desert Hearts

Donna Deitch made this movie about two women falling in love.

I read just about that much before seeing this movie.  The theater was full of lesbians, which surprised me but shouldn't have.  A program was handed out before the screening.  I try not to read these kind of things, they build expectations or spoil key elements, or just color things in a way that makes the film less enjoyable.  But I did catch the phrase "pioneer of queer film."

Well, the movie stands on its own as a love story.  The emotions and passion are raw and real and compelling, but the scenes themselves were a bit heavy handed.  It seemed to be ten minutes of lip smacking and nipples when they finally made love.

There were lots of one-liners and cuts.  The story struggled to fit into the time and the characters seemed to be interesting but left out.  The book felt loved at the expense of the show, but only at certain moments.  One of the best parts is that there were no asshole characters.  Nevada really looked like a place that anyone could escape to and find themselves.  There was a lot of real love among many other characters.  The environment was positive.

I enjoyed myself.

Film: Namesake

I watched this as part of a classic film series at the Paramount.

I had never heard of this director, Mira Nair, nor had I heard of this film.  I think I have fallen in love

Some of the most beautiful scenes came early in the film, as two soon-to-be immigrants to the USA get married in India. The dyed soles of their feet, the food, the decorations that continue on to their faces, they made me wonder if the black and white aesthetic of the weddings I have seen is not just austere garbaj.

It is an arranged wedding, and this comes up several times throughout the movie as the characters negotiate their new identities in a society that does not look kindly on arranged marriages.  They show great understanding in their lives as their children grow up in a different culture, as their ideas of selves change, and as death surprises everyone.  This wasn't another hacky reductive flag waver.

I'd like to watch more of these films, and perhaps read the book this was based on.

violence as the only game mechanic limits the scope of the story, the game, and the experience

Film: Black Caesar 1973

alright so there's a black gangster that takes over new york, maybe all of the U.S.  he's big, but there's a personal thing with someone who happens to be powerful and ends up in the same line of work.  story arc.  you know, where at the end, it goes down

the best scenes were the chases, they captured the chaos, the intensity.  the love scenes were too rapey.  gross.  the rest seemed all too close up.  like, i don't need to see this guy up close, or at least light him well.  people were often sweating

Film: Rubin and Ed

The film explores the corners of entertainment: boredom, absurdity, nothingness.  There were some disgusting moments.  The characters are crazy; the characters make sense.

Visually there are some excellent moments where I felt like I was riding shotgun with the director's third eye.

The dialogue was stilted at times, killing momentum, at other times prompting laughter.

Who is the main character?

Who is the king?

Its hard to say what this film is about, I love it.  It was largely unpredictable.

There were a few asswipes.

Film: Good Will Hunting

robin williams does a pretty good job.  so does matt damon.  ben affleck does decently.  the rest of the cast I don't know about.  why is this movie over two hours long?

I think they really had something and then, around the 90 minute mark things started to be melodrama sitcom without any of the entertainment or jokes.

did i learn about attachment disorder? what really did I take away from this film?  well, mat damon does propose eating caramels as a first date.

ok, and i learned about the fields medal.  cool, cool.

now its time to read roger ebert. ok, he made a good point about the parallel between the two professors and will hunting, trying to reconcile themselves.  but it was a bit of a spoiler and i'm not convinced he really believed it was worth 4 stars.  he even says the ending was completely predictable and that the beauty was in the small moments.  I still think something happened with this film, it must have been cut at the last minute, or ran into budget problems,  something.  It changes direction too radically and pointlessly.

there are a lot of hacky lines, "follow me if you want to live."  i think the sex scene maybe has one scene too many, but it also shows how passionate they are.  this might be more important because the two characters don't seem to be developing a romantic relationship before this scene.  the couldn't do it with lines, they did it with naked bodies.

after i write this i want to read what, if anything, roger ebert wrote about this.

well, he doesn't use a power washer.  he uses a sprayer with biodegradable cleaner and brushes dirt off.  then he uses varnish and stain mixed together.  i dunno.  why even have a deck without a roof, anyway?

but yeah, i watched this to try to learn how to clean my textured deck and this really didn't apply to me

but yeah this guy's deck looks alright in the end.

Film: Rock and Rule

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_%26_Rule

i saw this on 35 mm at weird wednesdays at alamo.  some guys tried to tell me too much about the movie before it started.  they had mics and were friends.  i wanted to yell at them and tell them to kiss. they were being overly earnest.

about the film.  wow, the guys weren't wrong.  the animation was amazing.  hand drawn holographs and the detail everywhere. the TV aesthetic parts were doubly animated.  they said 300 animators were working on this project and it almost bankrupted the studio.  i thought that was blah blah blah but after seeing it i think that was something I would have wondered about.

oh yeah and the music has never been released.  it was all pretty good, but it was kinda weird that the best song was in the first 5 minutes.

the bad guy was pretty darn evil, but i dont really know if it mattered.  there were lighthearted bits here and there.  sometimes the crowd laughed, like when someone's butt showed through a pipe.  i think i was pretty in sync with the crowd for the most part, which is rare for me.  usually i laugh alone.

the story showed real thought and the message was timeless, a real masterpiece.  like the guys with mics that didn't kiss said, it is better than heavy metal.

YT: Tunnels and Culverts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62-pK2ISlv4

This engineering model video is about tunnels and culverts.  Round culverts can hold more weight but take up more space and need to be carefully backfilled.  These are short an quiet.  I like the series but I won't watch all of them.  I don't know when I would need to know these things.  It feels a bit trivial.

YT: World Tree Felling Championship Final

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vtMsH6KhK4
I have no idea what they are doing in this video.  Chopping trees from the top? They are very skilled and athletic, but I don't know how much this resembles actual tree chopping.  My guess is not very closely.  Also, the angle makes it a bit hard to see what all of the choppers (?) are doing.  The crowd seems to cheer randomly and gives me a bit of fomo, I rewound a couple of times to see if I had missed anything but didn't see what make them aw and ooh.  Still, this video was entertaining.

this mason talks about building a brick wall in the "old school." he shows an 800 year old wall.  it has a water table, basically a splash guard made of granite at the bottom, and a terracotta roof.  the wall is solid brick, there's no rebar.  it looks great.

YT: This old house: bathroom sink and basement wall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yCBQ2WRbyI

saw some cool bell clips in the first part where they install a second sink.  also the copper supply tubing that is part of the sink is interesting.  using putty underneath the spout is something i dont usually see.  maybe these days there's a washer built in? I wonder

the second part with the basement hole.. neato.  the mortar mixing looks great.  doing it by hand is tough, a drill makes it easy to mix.  also using a cold chisel to get chisel out a hole thats perpendicular to the wall so the mortar sticks.  that makes sense to me.

(edit: it does say in the title of the video that this is from 2011.  methods may have changed since then)

YT: Tech Lead loses money

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IcvRe8bQhU

Tech Lead talks about getting hosed in commodities.  He lost a lot of money.  I learned about the commodities crash of 2014, which seems to be kind of mysterious.  So he stopped trading, and he said money is about lifestyle, and he wants to maintain his lifestyle by working at nice companies.  That sounds like a good plan to me.

YT: Five problem solving methods

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBuHSRDGZBY

This video from CS Dojo shows some real steps he took to solve problems.  It was really helpful to see how these could strategies could be applied to a real problem.

Here are the steps:

Tip #1: Come up with a brute-force solution - 1:23
Tip #2: Think of a simpler version of the problem - 2:34
Tip #3: Think with simpler examples -> try noticing a pattern - 5:54
Tip #4: Use some visualization - 10:10
Tip #5: Test your solution on a few examples - 15:09

#3 and #4 were almost the same, he used pretty much the same matrix for both.  The matrix he made turned out to be the visualization. But, there was a bit more sorting done so it *was* actually a bit better, even though the concept was essentially the same.

Anyway, CS Dojo really nailed this one.

this guy passed pro and associate levels in 5 weeks.  he breaks down the tests, multiple choice, some with full pages of text to read.  sounds like the test time is just enough to take the test, he said he finished with only 1 minute remaining.  he used acloudguru but he said they werent as good for the pro exam.

someone in the comments mentioned that you can pass an easy aws test to get a 50% coupon on your next aws exam. nice tip.

YT: How to change a bathroom faucet

Home Depot's take:

kind of an ideal situation.  the vanity and faucet are pretty new, there's nothing no corrosion or old rusty pipes to remove.

Dandlic's take:

solid tips, it helps to have a second person to center the faucet.

This old house:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsqQC26uhqc

theyre changing a whole vanity here.  they use compression supply valves instead of soldering.   also the countertop is granite so they use special putty, normal plumber's putty contains oil which will stain the granite.  intsall the sink before putting the countertop into the cabinet

YT: This old house on copper pipe

They go over some of the different kinds of copper pipe, type L and type M.  I still can't remember which is which.  There are also lots of different tees and ells that I havent see before.  This short little video was quite helpful and didn't waste time with an intro.  I like it.

YT: Tech Lead on Docker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbUXb4pQbPY

YT: What is Pytorch?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbJ-2G2GXL0

Siraj Raval explains what PyTorch is.  Torch was written in Lua and some people rewrote it in python as PyTorch.  Symbolic programing and imperative programming are important concepts to understand to understand what PyTorch is.  Somehow this is related to deep learning, which has something to do with neural networks.

Tensorflow - best documentation for machine learning. ok tensorflow is similar to pytorch.
Distributed cross validation
Dynamic Computation Graphing
Writing a whole program before running it.

Static graphs work well for fixed-size networks, but sometimes dynamic graphs are more useful when the input changes.  I'm not sure what kinds of changes would make the switch beneficial, but I hope to understand that soon.

autograd package, I guess this is a framework.

Sorry this one post is a mess.  There was just so much info and most of it was jargon.

YT: What is Docker?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dfLOzuIg2o
Docker is kinda like a virtual machine but there are significant differences.  But yeah, Docker helps people ensure compatibility across platforms.  It lowers costs because you don't have to spend as much effort to port whatever youre making.

YT: Huevos Rancheros

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYhnyp-xKTs

The sauce looks fun to make and delicious to eat.  I'll have to get ahold of some of those peppers.

2 white onions 4 Roma tomatoes, cored 2 jalapenos 2 serrano peppers 6 garlic cloves (divided) 2 guajillo chiies finely chopped

Slice the onion in half, but be sure to keep the root ends intact. Begin by preparing the vegetables: Core the tomatoes, slice the stems off the jalapeno and serrano peppers and remove the seeds, if desired to reduce the spiciness. Slice the onions in half, but keep the root intact. Fill a large saucepan about halfway with water. Add all the vegetables and 4 of the garlic cloves. Bring to a boil for about 10 minutes or until the tomatoes are tender, adding more water if needed. Remove the vegetables with a slotted spoon and let cool. Peel the outer skin of the tomatoes off and discard (soaking them in cold water beforehand, will release the skin easier). Cut the stems off the jalapeno and serrano peppers, and remove the seeds, if desired. Remove the root of the onions. Add all the vegetables, along with the remaining 2 garlic cloves to a blender, and diced guajillo peppers and Salt and pepper, to taste. Blend until smooth. Pour the contents in a saucepan to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover and continue to cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

YT: CS Dojo Algorithms and Data Structures

This is a big series:

A few things I learned about:

Hash tables
Arrays
Memory Management

at first there were some interesting examples, then it switched into what i call "black box" mode, where there are random numbers and boxes, with numbers move in and out of boxes.  no story or reasoning.  at least Mr CS Dojo has crisp pronunciation so I can watch the videos at 2x speed.  They are coherent, too.  I am rarely distracted because I don't get confused.  In other words he does a good job.

YT: Github Tutorial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fKg7e37bQE
this video explains github and git.  basically its so multiple people can work on code together, it deals with people overwriting the same stuff.  its like a google doc in terms of multiuser abilities, but it is for code.  looks to be very useful.  this kind of thing never came up in my computer classes from way back, so I learned something.

YT: What is a scrum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU0llRltyFM

This breaks it down.  It is a "agile" development process.

the most interesting part was how they track the process of adding features by time, and then they can see if they are going to make the release date.

YT: CS grad school from tech lead

YT: How to lay pavers

I've taken on a patio project where I lay down some bricks over a bed of sand.  I've watched quite a few videos on the subject.

for a walkway, they use rock dust and quarter inch stones as a base, and then a layer of sand.  they compacted the sand

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elSao6Qc_94
uses road base and then rock dust.  no sand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48pp5pNY7x8
i watched this twice but can't remember much besides this guy being too opinionated and that he uses really heavy machinery.

this is probably the most comprehensive one and the tips here apply best to my needs

YT: Planet X3 Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBtas1yBRxw
this guy does a good job of reviewing planet x3, which is a game that 8bit guy made.  the game seems like it would be a challenge to play, you have an army but you have to control each unit yourself.  anyway the reviewer covers the art, the sound, the options, the gameplay, and does a good job.  however, there are some sounds that are really loud and if this guy wasn't so earnest i might call them horrific.  all in all good.

YT: 8 bit guy builds his dream computer

Anyway, a lot of the stuff I had never heard of and didn't understand.  Except there was a bit about dates and timestamps that seemed like a simple thing so I was surprised that it wasn't adequate, and also the crowd laughed a lot at this slide.

YT: Rashida Jones has a docmumentary

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLYszpvyED4

Well she is alright in the interview.  Seems like there's a bit of one-sidedness from the interviewer.  Why did they need to wear matching clothes?  I guess I just wanted to see some critical questioning about weaknesses in the movie, or maybe just tell us if there are any.  It was fine as far as publicity stuff goes.

YT: Day in the life of an indie game developer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9MLwI70zcE

this is more of a fan service video, most of the content is about what he eats, but still, he shows that he codes three times a day, and is exploring a lot.  he also interacts with his followers quite a bit.
