Well I rewatched this. I remember the scenes where he loses his mental to be quite compelling and disturbing. On this go around I noticed there was a lot of talk of medication. The personal notes were stupid, almost irrelevant, and that losing your mind might make sense when you come into contact with a higher power.
Drilling into your head might even be rational at a certain stage. I don't find myself filled with curiousity about the problems that he tries to deal with. I don't worry about his friend that dies, or the bad guys that give him computer parts. Mostly I think his neighbor is awesome and cute. Who wouldn't want those samosas. I wish I wrote a review of this when I first saw it. It would be an interesting comparison, then and now.
Well, let's see if Ebert has anything to say.
When you're looking for something that doesn't exist, it makes you crazier the closer you get to it.
But I am thrilled when a man risks his mind in the pursuit of a dangerous obsession. Max is out on a limb.

Film: The Seventh Seal
I did this one backwards, kind of. I read Roger Ebert's review after I watched the movie and before writing this.
This film I heard two conflicting accounts of. One was that it was classic, and another that it was a sleep maker.
Well, the first half does start slowly, and the scenes are bland, the dialog sparse. The setting isn't quite developed. It was only after reading a review of the film that I realized the plague was real rather than a metaphor.
I did watch this in several parts, maybe it was just inattention. I think death is an interesting character. I don't understand the Christian religion and really don't understand what they are referring to most of the time. But I can see the humanity in it. Well, what is the point of life?
Dance and be in love, according to lenny Kravitz.
There's a witch to be burned at the stake, it all seemed a bit disjointed.
What was it Really like to live in a village as the plague swept through. Were people stealing? Running around screaming while dying? Trying to get god to spare them?
Well, were there really strawberries to pick on the road next to the ocean.
I liked this film a lot but I don't think this is what people had in mind when they told me about it.
But yes, I can see how people could obsess over this film and write a lot of stuff, watch it again and again, break down the script. It is a film for dissection. I don't know if watching it is really the aim.
Ebert said it was just like a play, and it shows. It seems like the scenes cut around and there are a lot of solo speech type dialogs.
Well, I might write more later.

Ok so this is fun fun function but also just a ted talk from someone.
they talk a lot about themselves.
they think making people laugh makes the world better. i might agree, but they don't support their assertion very well.
and so, i learned a few things, but also the story seems so similar, starting out, blah blah struggle, did some things, now here i am
why does she seem so nervous.
ok but yeah, the website where people can play piano, but lots of people can log on but there is still only one piano. that's funny.
anyway, like the comment at the top says, i wish there was a bit of commentary from the host. i'd like to know what he liked about it, why he let it take over his channel

Film: Louder Than Words
This film had a much clearer idea of what a film should be. A deaf girl wants to play drums but her dad doesn't want her to lose her hearing. Her music director at school who was apparently born yesterday. Doesn't want the deaf girl to play drums and ruin the fundraising event for the school.
Well, it was fun to see her playing drums while not listening to anything. Just imagining it in her head.
But everyone seemed to prim and done up. School is a bit grimier than that, I think.

Film: Lobster
This movie was all in the dark. There was closed captioning.
I couldn't tell if the lobster was the narrator, or if the actor was a lobster. There were UFOs, and lots of vomit.
Well, I haven't seen a film like it. I felt the narrative shift, I sensed the characters struggle. There was nothing to see.
What an easy feat to reproduce that I'd never seen before.

Film: Dark Light: The Art of Blind Photographers
So there was an art exhibit in Los Angeles featuring photographs by the best blind photographers from around the world. This film featured three of them. They had all become blind in different ways. One had childhood glaucoma, one developed it in his 20s, and another has had a stable but very limited amount of vision his whole life.
Well their photos are pretty amazing. I don't know if the dramatized shots of them actually taking photos turned out the best results. One gets the impression that they perform a bit for the camera, or are perhaps distracted by the attention. They don't normally shoot with a film crew following them around. There are also some scenes with famous photographers who are sighted, but who are they? They don't seem to have that much to say, or maybe they should just show us some of their own damn photographs. That might make a bit more sense.
Anyway, there was a bit of nudity, as one photographer likes to work with the human form. Well, that means it might be difficult to show this to children or in an educational setting.
But yeah, it was very fun to see artists coming from such similar but different perspectives than my own. One of them said "Art isn't a hobby, it is an obsession." I like that. I feel camaraderie with these people. I like that, too.

Film: Lunch With Yoshi 2012
This is a film about a blind woman that can cook. She lives in Thailand but also speaks English and Japanese. I wish they would have showed us the food that she cooked, as almost any cooking show would have. She seems like a very interesting person. I'd love to each lunch with her. I'd love to try her food.
She said she uses her ears when she frys things. I guess I rely on my eyes an awful lot when cooking. Maybe I should fry something with my eyes closed. That will be fun.

Film: No Easy Target
A film set in the Star Wars universe, but with jedi who have down syndrome.
The special effects are quite excellent, and like any action movie there is gratuitous shooting and dying. The jedi must have rejected people, too? Well that's an interesting question posed by this film.
The sets were pretty neat. I guess some parts were film in a brewery, which does actually look quite a bit like what a spaceship might.
Well, many of the actors seemed to actually have down syndrome and seemed to be speaking from the heart when they were talking about how excluded they felt. They made a pretty bad ass film, though it was a bit ham fisted in some parts. Overall I enjoyed it as any other Star Wars film.

Film: The Adventures of Salt Man
Well, he uses radioactive salt on his food and becomes a salt man. He hits his head to release salt.. from his hair?
He fights a snail and wins. I wonder what else he can do.
The animation is fun. I don't know about the filter that makes it look like old film, but I have seen much worse actual cartoons, like the 20 minute versions.

But also, I learned a bit about neural networks. I need to bone up on math if I want to play with these.
But also a lot of pitfalls that I would probably fall into. If it ain't broke don't fix it pushing less than ideal structures ahead into the final product.

Film: Exit Through the Gift Shop
Well I guess I think I know what I am supposed to have learned and seen after this film is over. "" This guy is a fakey money piler!!!!!!!!
But what I learned was a lot about street art. They weren't the focus of the narrative. The clips of them doing shit. Building, the process, just at kinkos printing and cutting. nothing too crazy
I guess he played everyone and got paid, but I mean he did it.
His art is hacky. I think he knows. But the scene, that giant gallery. He made it into a shopping mall.
I don't know if he is an artist, but what he did was art.
or something
now I read this, just a few seconds after writing this, and I think it is bullshit.
Anyway, this was an entertaining film and here I am with questions. So that's nice.

Film: The Fly
A friend of mine said this was the best love story of our time.
I'd seen it as a young and remembered a lot of sweaty people. The lens of youth.
Well, there were some really lovely scenes in the first half.
The second half, it turns into a bit of a horror movie. Can't tell how I'd react if my lover turned into an actual monster. I imagine it would be even more melodramatic than what they put together for this film.
Some pretty good special effects.
Some pretty good leadups to the end.
Some pretty good lead ups to a potential sequel.
Some pretty good questions about love.
Now, let's read what Ebert wrote.
Well, he said some thought it was about the AIDS epidemic. And that he doesn't like to watch it for fun.

Film: Secret Life of Bees
Watched this on a plane. Here's my note version review:
Dunno if the pain and sorrow scattered throughout the film really pushed the plot and characters into showing themselves, there seemed to be a disconnect between the action and reaction. And the race issues brought up seemed to be tangential to the personal narratives that were built. I can't fault a film for not having a happily ever after ending, but what is the point of the honey in the film? Maybe I just don't have the perspective to appreciate the symbols.

Somehow got a bit ahead of myself. I'm on 7 without doing 6. Probably watched it but forgot to review.

So this video did a few examples. But all the data was meaningless. It needs to be meaningful for me.
So, I'll have to code something. I have a direction, just need a push.

Film: Casablanca
Rick's Bar Americana
I don't know if it all plays out like a movie, or if it all plays out like real life. Put that Vichy water in the trash. I fell asleep during this movie and then woke up and played it again.
I don't know if the characters really love each other, or if the sets are bad. They drink all the time. God they must be so drunk. I'm glad I'm not drunk like that. I don't know.
It is a classic film.
Sometimes Bogart looks really old, sometimes he looks handsome.
The leading lady looks good, but the lighting around her face is too staged. Blurry, sheen, impossible.
The lines have been repeated. Have they always? Was it original then, when it was made? What movies were overshadowed by this one?
I can't remember the song that they love.

Film: Free Solo
This guy wants to climb a big mountain without a rope.
He has done a lot of other big mountains without a rope.
But there is drama.
He has a small amygdala.
He has a girlfriend, and he climbs with her and keeps geeting injured.
What is the drama in this film? Well they also feature the filmmakers, who are also climbers, who are also friends. They know that being filmed adds an extra element of distraction or motivation.
They don't really talk about how they are going to keep that to a minimum except they do show a bit of the remote camera gear. I guess they didn't want to film the filming too much? But they do, especially with the guy on the ground with a telescopic lens. They have a bunch of shots of him.
This movie made me feel physically ill at times. My hands are sweating right now. But yeah, it seemed a bit hacked up at times. Maybe it was the voice overs over the photos, and comparing them to the sound of the voices as they spoke naturally throughout the film. I can't really blame them for trying to maximize the drama. I don't doubt he climbed the wall.
But it did seem a bit of a star-making rather than film making. Maybe that quest for purity. I dunno, this film did keep me awake.

Film: The Dark Knight
I remember seeing this movie a long time ago, maybe in Korea. The sound had a problem, I couldn't understand batman's low and gravelly voice. I remember the joker being actually scary. Some of the scenes with him upside down, it was just the way a bad guy should be shown.
But yeah, this time, the film put me to sleep. Why is it so long? Who cares about the motorcycle. The fight scenes flop hard. Why don't they just shoot batman with a rocket. He doesn't seem to move fast enough. But the sleepy part came from mostly the dialog. I guess I didn't get that Harvey was the white knight, and that left batman to make the name for the movie.
Well yeah, parts of it are great, but it is all spread out over too much time. I was on a boring flight, hungry, thirsty and tired, hey it was a budget airline. But, I don't know if I could really recommend this movie for someone to actually watch. It just isn't compelling enough to sit through.
